Featured Artist: Cherie Byrne

Following the development of my interest in Art at University I moved into the education sector and taught Art to Primary students for 10 years.  During this time I nurtured my love of ceramics, pastels and oils.  Moving to Mansfield was an exciting development and I became a member of the Mansfield Artists Co- operative exhibiting paintings and framed Shibori pieces and of course enjoying the inspiration that is an intrinsic part of interacting with other creative people.  I then moved to Port Fairy and began to experiment with mosaics and oils.  Since moving to Melbourne in 2002 I have worked on larger mosaic projects and worked with my partner exploring the potential in steel; as well as continuing to paint.

I find myself responding metaphorically to a range of environmental issues and have explored the effects of salination (‘where has all the water gone’) and in several other pieces I have explored the impact of gradual urban sprawl into our precious bushlands and the concept of what it means to fish!

My most recent trip to Morocco and Barcelona inspired this current range of works: Gaudi’s  spectacular Sagrada Familia and Parc Guell. The vibrant colours of the Medina; the spice markets, and the gentle stillness of the Berber people have found a mirror in my work.  Colour and texture have been a particular focus and I have experimented with subtle background textures (reminiscent of the rich tadelakt walls).   I have aimed to inflame the subject matter with exaggerated prominence.
